Puppies

To ensure compliance with the law, it is important to note that microchipping all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age is a legal requirement. Additionally, registering each dog’s identity and the contact details of its keeper on an approved database is mandatory, as stated by The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015. We want to emphasize the significance of adhering to these regulations, as failure to comply can lead to penalties of up to £500.

Cats & Kittens

To mitigate the risk of cats and kittens straying into unknown territories, it is strongly advised to have them microchipped, ensuring their identification and facilitating their safe return if lost. Opting for microchipping offers a superior level of effectiveness compared to traditional collars or pet tags, as it eliminates the risk of them being lost, broken, or intentionally removed.

Under potential government initiatives, microchipping could become a legal obligation for all cats in England, and the commencement date for this could be this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

Our appointment duration typically ranges from 30 minutes or more, depending on the size of the litter.

Informed Consent

This is an opportunity for us to walk you through the microchipping procedure, ensuring that you are well-informed about every aspect. We kindly ask you to provide your consent by filling out an informed consent form for each pet undergoing the microchipping procedure. This ensures that all the pet’s information is correct before it is recorded in the database.

Fitting the microchip

We understand the importance of your pet’s relaxation, and we make it a priority before initiating the microchipping process. With your pet’s comfort in mind, we will place them on a soft vet bed mat, typically on a table or a similar surface. Your cooperation in holding them securely is greatly valued. As part of our comprehensive approach, we will carry out a scan to verify that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet. This precautionary measure is implemented to provide you with peace of mind. Once your pet is settled, we delicately insert a needle between the shoulder blades and introduce the microchip under the skin, guaranteeing a smooth and gentle procedure. With the microchipping process focused on the area between the shoulder blades, which has minimal nerve endings, it is usually painless for most pets. After withdrawing the needle, we will carefully apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe to minimize bleeding and prevent any potential infection. After the insertion, we will perform a thorough scan to ensure the microchip is appropriately positioned and that the scanner effectively reads and links the unique ID to the database, ensuring reliable identification.

Pet Registration

Our commitment extends to registering all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours of the appointment. This database includes a UK-based call centre that is available round the clock, providing expert support and a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. After the microchip registration process, you can expect to receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, ensuring that the registration is complete.

To ensure compliance with legal requirements and maximize the effectiveness of the microchip, it is important to keep your details up to date, particularly when there are changes in your address or contact information.

After The Appointment

Allowing the implantation site to settle and heal requires avoiding contact for a minimum of 4 hours. During this period, your pet may experience sensitivity if the area is touched.

To maintain a clean and sterile environment for the injection site, it is best to keep your pet indoors after the procedure, minimizing the risk of dirt entering and potentially causing an infection.

To promote proper healing and prevent any discomfort, it is recommended to refrain from using a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, allowing the site to settle without any rubbing or irritation.

For the well-being and comfort of your pet, it is best to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the implantation, giving the site sufficient time to heal and minimizing the risk of infection.
