Puppies
We would like to draw your attention to The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015, which specifies that it is a legal requirement to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age. Furthermore, it is essential to register each dog’s identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database. We urge you to understand that non-compliance with these regulations can result in a fine of up to £500.
Cats & Kittens
Considering the inherent curiosity of cats and kittens, it is highly recommended to microchip them, providing a reliable means of identification should they venture into unfamiliar surroundings. Unlike collars or pet tags, which can easily fall off or be removed, microchipping provides a highly reliable and permanent method of identification for your pet.
New government plans could make microchipping compulsory for all cats in England, possibly starting as early as this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment
Depending on the litter size, our appointments generally take 30 minutes or longer to ensure sufficient time for a thorough examination.
Informed Consent
We dedicate this time to discussing the microchipping procedure in depth, ensuring that you have a complete understanding of what it entails. To ensure accuracy and completeness, we will request that you fill in an informed consent form for each pet being microchipped. This important step guarantees that the pet’s information is correct before it is registered in the database.
Fitting the microchip
We understand the importance of your pet’s relaxation, and we make it a priority before initiating the microchipping process. We understand the importance of your pet’s comfort, and that’s why we will place them on a cozy vet bed mat, typically on a table or a similar surface. Your assistance in holding them in place is greatly appreciated. As part of our thorough process, we will conduct a scan to ensure that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet, providing you with complete peace of mind. When your pet is in position, we skillfully insert a needle between the shoulder blades and place the microchip under the skin. This step is performed with care to ensure your pet’s comfort. With the microchipping process focused on the area between the shoulder blades, which has minimal nerve endings, it is usually painless for most pets. We take immediate action by applying pressure on the injection site with an antibacterial skin wipe as soon as the needle is withdrawn. This prevents excessive bleeding and reduces the risk of infection. Our next step involves scanning the area to verify the accurate placement of the microchip and establish a reliable connection between the scanner and the database, allowing for the precise retrieval of the unique ID.
Pet Registration
Once the appointment is concluded, we will proceed to register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours. This database is backed by a UK-based call centre that operates 24/7, offering expert support and a specialized service for lost or stolen pets. The Smarttrace National Pet Database will send you a confirmation email to acknowledge the registration of the microchip and provide you with the necessary documentation.
To comply with the law and ensure accuracy, it is essential to keep your pet’s microchip details up to date, including any changes in address or contact information.
After The Appointment
To ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort, it is important to refrain from touching the implantation area for at least 4 hours. During this time, your pet may exhibit some sensitivity in the area.
We recommend keeping your pet indoors following the procedure to minimize the risk of dirt entering the injection site, which could potentially lead to an infection.
To ensure a smooth healing process and prevent any potential discomfort, it is advisable not to put a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours following the procedure, as this can help prevent rubbing and inflammation of the injection site.
For the best outcome and to avoid any potential complications, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before bathing your pet after the implantation to allow the site to heal and reduce the risk of infection.
