Why Microchip?

We emphasize the significance of microchipping your pet and enrolling their information on a national database to help locate them if they are lost or stolen.

Microchipping is the most reliable and permanent form of pet identification available to pet owners. Each microchip is encoded with a unique identification number, vastly increasing the chances of your pet finding their way home safely in the event they are lost.

The Permanence of Microchipping

Microchipping stands out as the unparalleled method of identification for pet owners, ensuring a permanent solution. The individual identification number assigned to each microchip plays a crucial role in maximizing the likelihood of your pet’s safe return home once they are identified. It’s a reliable and effective way to ensure their lifelong identification.

Puppies

We would like to emphasize that it is a legal obligation, as per The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015, to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age and register their identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database. We kindly inform you that failure to comply with this requirement may result in a fine of up to £500.

Cats & Kittens

Considering the inherent curiosity of cats and kittens, it is highly recommended to microchip them, providing a reliable means of identification should they venture into unfamiliar surroundings. Opting for microchipping offers a superior level of effectiveness compared to traditional collars or pet tags, as it eliminates the risk of them being lost, broken, or intentionally removed.

The government is considering making microchipping obligatory for all cats in England, and the commencement of this requirement could be as soon as this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

The length of the appointment can vary, usually lasting around 30 minutes or more, depending on the number of puppies or kittens in the litter.

Informed Consent

During this time, we will discuss the microchipping procedure in detail, explaining every step and what it entails. Prior to proceeding with the microchipping, we will kindly ask you to complete an informed consent form for each pet. This step is essential to ensure that all the details of your pet are accurately captured before they are entered into the database.

Fitting the microchip

Our top priority is to create a relaxed and comfortable environment for your pet during the microchipping procedure. To ensure your pet’s comfort throughout the procedure, we will position them on a soft vet bed mat, usually placed on a table or a similar surface. We kindly request your help in holding them securely. As part of our thorough process, we will conduct a scan to ensure that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet, providing you with complete peace of mind. Once your pet is ready, we gently insert a needle between the shoulder blades and release the microchip under the skin, ensuring a quick and virtually painless process. Your pet’s comfort is our priority, and in most cases, the microchipping procedure is painless due to the low concentration of nerves in the shoulder blade area. After withdrawing the needle, we will carefully apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe to minimize bleeding and prevent any potential infection. After the insertion, we will perform a thorough scan to ensure the microchip is appropriately positioned and that the scanner effectively reads and links the unique ID to the database, ensuring reliable identification.

Pet Registration

Once the appointment is concluded, we will proceed to register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours. This database is backed by a UK-based call centre that operates 24/7, offering expert support and a specialized service for lost or stolen pets. Rest assured that you will receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, acknowledging the successful registration of the microchip.

Keeping your details up to date is crucial to stay in accordance with the law and ensure the accuracy of your pet’s microchip information, especially in cases of address or contact changes.

After The Appointment

During the initial 4-hour period after the procedure, it is important to avoid contact with the implantation area. This allows the site to heal and reduces sensitivity that your pet may experience when the area is touched.

As a precautionary measure, we suggest keeping your pet indoors following the procedure to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the injection site and to reduce the likelihood of infection.

For the well-being of your pet and to prevent any potential discomfort or irritation, it is advisable not to use a harness or clothing on them for at least 4 hours following the procedure.

For the well-being and comfort of your pet, it is best to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the implantation, giving the site sufficient time to heal and minimizing the risk of infection.
