We firmly believe that microchipping provides pet owners with the only truly permanent method of identification. Each microchip contains a unique identification number, which significantly increases the likelihood of your pet returning home safely when they are identified.

Puppies

Ensuring compliance with the law, it is mandatory to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age and register their identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database, as stated by The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015. We kindly advise you to be aware that failure to comply with this requirement may lead to a fine of up to £500.

Cats & Kittens

Given the natural inquisitiveness of cats and kittens, microchipping is strongly recommended to minimize the chances of them ending up in unfamiliar or potentially dangerous environments. Microchipping stands as a superior alternative to collars and pet tags, providing unmatched effectiveness and peace of mind, as it cannot be misplaced, broken, or intentionally removed.

New government plans could make microchipping compulsory for all cats in England, possibly starting as early as this year.

Advantages Of Mobile Microchipping

  • Provides a stress-free experience for your puppy or kitten by conducting the procedure in their familiar and comforting home environment.
  • Fosters a sense of security for your pet by minimizing the time they spend away from their mothers during the microchipping process, reducing the potential for separation anxiety.
  • Conveniently spares you the trouble of transporting the whole litter to the vet, which can be challenging and may lead to car sickness and multiple bathroom breaks.
  • Convenient, at a time that suits you.
  • Provides two free transfers of owner’s details on the database, allowing for seamless updates and ensuring the information is up to date.
  • Complies with a professional code of conduct and maintains complete public liability insurance coverage, emphasizing the paramount importance placed on your pet’s safety.
  • Your appointment is treated with utmost care and attention, and we never rush through the process. Our priority is to deliver a comprehensive experience, including detailed aftercare instructions to offer you peace of mind.

When to Microchip

  • Puppies: Between 6-8 weeks of age.
  • Cats and Kittens: From 8 weeks old.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

Our appointment duration typically ranges from 30 minutes or more, depending on the size of the litter.

Informed Consent

It is during this period that we take the opportunity to provide a detailed explanation of the microchipping procedure and its components. As part of the process, we kindly request that you complete an informed consent form for each pet being microchipped. This step ensures that all the necessary details of your pet are accurate before registering them in the database.

Fitting the microchip

Your pet’s comfort and relaxation are of the highest importance to us, especially before we begin the microchipping process. We will provide a comfortable vet bed mat for your pet, usually placed on a table or a similar surface, ensuring their utmost comfort during the procedure. You will be kindly asked to hold them in place. To ensure your pet’s microchipping procedure goes smoothly, we will perform a scan to confirm that no previous chip has been inserted. This step is taken to ensure your peace of mind. Once your pet is settled, we delicately insert a needle between the shoulder blades and introduce the microchip under the skin, guaranteeing a smooth and gentle procedure. With the microchipping process focused on the area between the shoulder blades, which has minimal nerve endings, it is usually painless for most pets. Immediately after withdrawing the needle, we will gently apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This helps minimize bleeding and reduces the risk of infection. Once the microchip is inserted, we will conduct a scan to confirm its proper positioning and establish a successful connection between the scanner and the database, guaranteeing the accurate retrieval of the unique ID.

Pet Registration

Once your appointment is complete, we will promptly register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database, which includes a UK-based call centre available around the clock. This database offers expert support and features a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. The Smarttrace National Pet Database will issue a confirmation email to you, acknowledging the registration of the microchip for your pet.

Keeping your details up to date is crucial to stay in accordance with the law and ensure the accuracy of your pet’s microchip information, especially in cases of address or contact changes.

After The Appointment

For the first 4 hours following the procedure, it is recommended to refrain from touching the implantation area. This allows the site to heal and reduces potential sensitivity your pet may experience.

To maintain a clean and sterile environment for the injection site, it is best to keep your pet indoors after the procedure, minimizing the risk of dirt entering and potentially causing an infection.

For the best outcome and to prevent any unnecessary discomfort, we suggest avoiding the use of a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, as this can minimize the risk of rubbing and inflammation at the injection site.

To promote a healthy healing process and minimize the risk of infection, it is advisable not to bathe your pet for at least 24 hours after the implantation, allowing the site to heal undisturbed.
