Puppies
Ensuring compliance with the law, it is mandatory to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age and register their identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database, as stated by The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015. We kindly advise you to be aware that failure to comply with this requirement may lead to a fine of up to £500.
Cats & Kittens
Microchipping is strongly recommended for cats and kittens due to their natural curiosity, which increases the likelihood of them venturing into unexpected places. Opting for microchipping offers a superior level of effectiveness compared to traditional collars or pet tags, as it eliminates the risk of them being lost, broken, or intentionally removed.
New laws being considered by the government may mandate microchipping for all cats in England, and the proposed timeline for this could be this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment
Depending on the litter size, our appointments generally take 30 minutes or longer to ensure sufficient time for a thorough examination.
Informed Consent
This is an opportunity for us to walk you through the microchipping procedure, ensuring that you are well-informed about every aspect. As part of our protocol, we will ask you to fill in an informed consent form for each pet that will undergo microchipping. This step is crucial in ensuring that the pet’s details are accurately recorded on the database.
Fitting the microchip
Prioritizing your pet’s well-being, we strive to create a stress-free environment before commencing the microchipping procedure. To ensure your pet’s comfort throughout the procedure, we will position them on a soft vet bed mat, usually placed on a table or a similar surface. We kindly request your help in holding them securely. As part of our commitment to your pet’s well-being, we will carry out a scan to confirm that no previous chip has been inserted. This extra step is taken to give you peace of mind. With your pet prepared, we carefully insert a needle between the shoulder blades and implant the microchip under the skin. This procedure is done swiftly and with minimal discomfort. Most pets experience little to no discomfort during the microchipping procedure, as the shoulder blade area has limited nerve sensitivity. As soon as the needle is taken out, we will apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This immediate action reduces bleeding and minimizes the risk of infection. Our next step involves scanning the area to verify the accurate placement of the microchip and establish a reliable connection between the scanner and the database, allowing for the precise retrieval of the unique ID.
Pet Registration
After your appointment, we take immediate action to register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours. This database is accompanied by a UK-based call centre that remains accessible 24/7, providing expert support and a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. After the microchip registration process, you can expect to receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, ensuring that the registration is complete.
Keeping your details up to date is crucial to stay in accordance with the law and ensure the accuracy of your pet’s microchip information, especially in cases of address or contact changes.
After The Appointment
For the first 4 hours following the procedure, it is recommended to refrain from touching the implantation area. This allows the site to heal and reduces potential sensitivity your pet may experience.
To reduce the risk of infection, it is advisable to keep your pet indoors after the procedure, preventing any dirt from entering the injection site.
To ensure the comfort and healing of the injection site, we advise against using a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, as it may cause rubbing and inflammation.
For the well-being and comfort of your pet, it is best to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the implantation, giving the site sufficient time to heal and minimizing the risk of infection.
