Puppies
We would like to draw your attention to The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015, which specifies that it is a legal requirement to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age. Furthermore, it is essential to register each dog’s identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database. We urge you to understand that non-compliance with these regulations can result in a fine of up to £500.
Cats & Kittens
Microchipping is strongly recommended for cats and kittens due to their natural curiosity, which increases the likelihood of them venturing into unexpected places. Unlike collars or pet tags, which can easily fall off or be removed, microchipping provides a highly reliable and permanent method of identification for your pet.
New government plans could make microchipping compulsory for all cats in England, possibly starting as early as this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment
We allocate a minimum of 30 minutes for the appointment, allowing ample time to accommodate the size of the litter.
Informed Consent
We make use of this time to go over the microchipping procedure step by step, ensuring that you are fully informed about what to expect. As part of the process, we kindly request that you complete an informed consent form for each pet being microchipped. This step ensures that all the necessary details of your pet are accurate before registering them in the database.
Fitting the microchip
Your pet’s comfort and relaxation are of the highest importance to us, especially before we begin the microchipping process. Your pet’s comfort is our priority, and we will carefully position them on a comfortable vet bed mat, typically placed on a table or a similar surface. We kindly ask for your assistance in holding them during the procedure. As part of our comprehensive approach, we will carry out a scan to verify that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet. This precautionary measure is implemented to provide you with peace of mind. When your pet is in position, we skillfully insert a needle between the shoulder blades and place the microchip under the skin. This step is performed with care to ensure your pet’s comfort. Most pets experience little to no discomfort during the microchipping procedure, as the shoulder blade area has limited nerve sensitivity. Once the needle is removed, we will promptly apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This ensures minimal bleeding and reduces the potential for infection. Once the microchip is inserted, we will conduct a scan to confirm its proper positioning and establish a successful connection between the scanner and the database, guaranteeing the accurate retrieval of the unique ID.
Pet Registration
Once your appointment is complete, we will promptly register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database, which includes a UK-based call centre available around the clock. This database offers expert support and features a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. After the microchip registration process, you can expect to receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, ensuring that the registration is complete.
Maintaining up-to-date information is essential to meet legal obligations and ensure the proper functioning of the microchip, particularly when there are changes in your address or contact details.
After The Appointment
During the initial 4-hour period after the procedure, it is important to avoid contact with the implantation area. This allows the site to heal and reduces sensitivity that your pet may experience when the area is touched.
To ensure a clean and sterile environment for the injection site, it is advisable to keep your pet indoors after the procedure, minimizing the risk of contamination and potential infection.
We recommend refraining from using a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure to minimize the risk of rubbing and inflammation, ensuring a comfortable recovery at the injection site.
To promote a healthy healing process and minimize the risk of infection, it is advisable not to bathe your pet for at least 24 hours after the implantation, allowing the site to heal undisturbed.
