Why Microchip?
We share the sadness caused by the loss or theft of thousands of pets annually. That’s why we stress the importance of microchipping and registering your pet’s details on a national database.
We firmly believe in the effectiveness of microchipping as the sole permanent method of pet identification. The unique identification number carried by each microchip acts as a crucial factor in ensuring the safe return of your pet.
The Permanence of Microchipping
When it comes to identification, microchipping is the sole solution that offers pet owners a truly permanent method. With each microchip containing its own distinct identification number, the likelihood of your pet finding their way back home safely is significantly enhanced once they are identified. Choosing microchipping for your pet’s identification ensures a reliable and effective method that will last their entire lifetime.

Puppies
We would like to draw your attention to The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015, which specifies that it is a legal requirement to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age. Furthermore, it is essential to register each dog’s identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database. We urge you to understand that non-compliance with these regulations can result in a fine of up to £500.
Cats & Kittens
Protect your cats and kittens by heeding the strong recommendation to microchip them, as their curiosity may lead them to wander into unfamiliar and potentially unsafe areas. Microchipping surpasses the limitations of collars and pet tags by offering a secure and permanent means of identification, ensuring your pet’s information remains intact and easily accessible.
All cats in England may have to be microchipped by law as soon as this year under new government plans.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment
We allocate a minimum of 30 minutes for the appointment, allowing ample time to accommodate the size of the litter.
Informed Consent
We make use of this time to go over the microchipping procedure step by step, ensuring that you are fully informed about what to expect. As part of our protocol, we will ask you to fill in an informed consent form for each pet that will undergo microchipping. This step is crucial in ensuring that the pet’s details are accurately recorded on the database.
Fitting the microchip
Prioritizing your pet’s well-being, we strive to create a stress-free environment before commencing the microchipping procedure. Ensuring your pet’s comfort, we will position them on a cozy vet bed mat, typically placed on a table or a similar surface, while kindly requesting your assistance in holding them steady. We will perform a scan to ensure that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet, guaranteeing your peace of mind throughout the microchipping process. Once your pet is settled, we delicately insert a needle between the shoulder blades and introduce the microchip under the skin, guaranteeing a smooth and gentle procedure. We take great care to ensure the microchipping procedure is painless for your pet, as the shoulder blade area is relatively insensitive to pain. Once the needle is removed, we will promptly apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This ensures minimal bleeding and reduces the potential for infection. Subsequently, we will perform a scan to verify the placement of the microchip beneath the skin and ensure proper functioning. This involves confirming that the scanner accurately detects the unique ID and successfully links it to the database.
Pet Registration
Rest assured that within 24 hours of the appointment, we will ensure the registration of all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database. With a UK-based call centre that operates 24/7, this database provides expert support and offers a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. Rest assured that you will receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, acknowledging the successful registration of the microchip.
Maintaining up-to-date information is essential to meet legal obligations and ensure the proper functioning of the microchip, particularly when there are changes in your address or contact details.
After The Appointment
Allowing the implantation site to settle and heal requires avoiding contact for a minimum of 4 hours. During this period, your pet may experience sensitivity if the area is touched.
As a precautionary measure, we suggest keeping your pet indoors following the procedure to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the injection site and to reduce the likelihood of infection.
To avoid any discomfort or inflammation at the injection site, we recommend refraining from putting a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure.
For the well-being and comfort of your pet, it is best to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the implantation, giving the site sufficient time to heal and minimizing the risk of infection.
