Puppies

Ensuring compliance with the law, it is mandatory to microchip all dogs before they reach 8 weeks of age and register their identity and the contact details of their keeper on an approved database, as stated by The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015. We kindly advise you to be aware that failure to comply with this requirement may lead to a fine of up to £500.

Cats & Kittens

To mitigate the risk of cats and kittens straying into unknown territories, it is strongly advised to have them microchipped, ensuring their identification and facilitating their safe return if lost. When it comes to identification, microchipping far exceeds the reliability of collars or pet tags, as it eliminates the common issues of loss, breakage, or removal.

In an effort to enhance pet identification and safety, the government is exploring the possibility of requiring microchipping for all cats in England, with the introduction date as early as this year.

What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

We schedule appointments with a minimum duration of 30 minutes, allowing adequate time to accommodate different litter sizes.

Informed Consent

It is during this period that we take the opportunity to provide a detailed explanation of the microchipping procedure and its components. To ensure accuracy and completeness, we will request that you fill in an informed consent form for each pet being microchipped. This important step guarantees that the pet’s information is correct before it is registered in the database.

Fitting the microchip

Creating a calm and relaxed atmosphere for your pet is our utmost priority before initiating the microchipping process. Your pet’s comfort is our priority, and we will carefully position them on a comfortable vet bed mat, typically placed on a table or a similar surface. We kindly ask for your assistance in holding them during the procedure. We will perform a scan to ensure that no previous microchip has been inserted into your pet, guaranteeing your peace of mind throughout the microchipping process. With careful precision, we insert a needle between the shoulder blades of your pet and release the microchip under the skin, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience. With the microchipping process focused on the area between the shoulder blades, which has minimal nerve endings, it is usually painless for most pets. Once the needle is removed, we will promptly apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This ensures minimal bleeding and reduces the potential for infection. Upon completion of the insertion, we will conduct a comprehensive scan to verify the correct placement of the microchip and establish a successful connection between the scanner and the database, ensuring the accurate retrieval of the unique ID.

Pet Registration

Our commitment extends to registering all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours of the appointment. This database includes a UK-based call centre that is available round the clock, providing expert support and a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. After the microchip registration process, you can expect to receive a confirmation email from the Smarttrace National Pet Database, ensuring that the registration is complete.

Keeping your details up to date is crucial to stay in accordance with the law and ensure the accuracy of your pet’s microchip information, especially in cases of address or contact changes.

After The Appointment

Allowing the implantation site to settle and heal requires avoiding contact for a minimum of 4 hours. During this period, your pet may experience sensitivity if the area is touched.

As a precautionary measure, we suggest keeping your pet indoors following the procedure to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the injection site and to reduce the likelihood of infection.

For the best outcome and to prevent any unnecessary discomfort, we suggest avoiding the use of a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, as this can minimize the risk of rubbing and inflammation at the injection site.

For the well-being and comfort of your pet, it is best to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the implantation, giving the site sufficient time to heal and minimizing the risk of infection.
