What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

The length of the appointment can vary, usually lasting around 30 minutes or more, depending on the number of puppies or kittens in the litter.

Fitting the microchip

Before we start the microchipping procedure, we take significant measures to ensure your pet feels calm and at ease. Ensuring your pet’s comfort, we will position them on a cozy vet bed mat, typically placed on a table or a similar surface, while kindly requesting your assistance in holding them steady. As part of our commitment to your pet’s well-being, we will carry out a scan to confirm that no previous chip has been inserted. This extra step is taken to give you peace of mind. When your pet is in position, we skillfully insert a needle between the shoulder blades and place the microchip under the skin. This step is performed with care to ensure your pet’s comfort. Your pet’s comfort is our priority, and in most cases, the microchipping procedure is painless due to the low concentration of nerves in the shoulder blade area. Once the needle is removed, we will promptly apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This ensures minimal bleeding and reduces the potential for infection. Upon completion of the insertion, we will conduct a comprehensive scan to verify the correct placement of the microchip and establish a successful connection between the scanner and the database, ensuring the accurate retrieval of the unique ID.

After your appointment, we take immediate action to register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database within 24 hours. This database is accompanied by a UK-based call centre that remains accessible 24/7, providing expert support and a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. Once the microchip is registered, the Smarttrace National Pet Database will promptly send you a confirmation email to acknowledge the successful registration.

To ensure compliance with legal requirements and maximize the effectiveness of the microchip, it is important to keep your details up to date, particularly when there are changes in your address or contact information.

After The Appointment

To ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort, it is important to refrain from touching the implantation area for at least 4 hours. During this time, your pet may exhibit some sensitivity in the area.

As a precautionary measure, we suggest keeping your pet indoors following the procedure to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the injection site and to reduce the likelihood of infection.

To ensure the comfort and healing of the injection site, we advise against using a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, as it may cause rubbing and inflammation.

For the well-being and proper healing of your pet’s implantation site, it is recommended to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the procedure to minimize the risk of infection.
