What To Expect At Your Pet’s Appointment

The length of the appointment can vary, usually lasting around 30 minutes or more, depending on the number of puppies or kittens in the litter.

Informed Consent

We make use of this time to go over the microchipping procedure step by step, ensuring that you are fully informed about what to expect. Prior to proceeding with the microchipping, we will kindly ask you to complete an informed consent form for each pet. This step is essential to ensure that all the details of your pet are accurately captured before they are entered into the database.

Fitting the microchip

We place great importance on ensuring the utmost relaxation for your pet before commencing the microchipping procedure. We will provide a comfortable vet bed mat for your pet, usually placed on a table or a similar surface, ensuring their utmost comfort during the procedure. You will be kindly asked to hold them in place. To provide you with complete reassurance, we will conduct a scan to check for any previous microchip, ensuring a fresh and accurate microchipping procedure for your pet. Once your pet is settled, we delicately insert a needle between the shoulder blades and introduce the microchip under the skin, guaranteeing a smooth and gentle procedure. With the microchipping process focused on the area between the shoulder blades, which has minimal nerve endings, it is usually painless for most pets. As soon as the needle is taken out, we will apply pressure on the injection site using an antibacterial skin wipe. This immediate action reduces bleeding and minimizes the risk of infection. Our next step involves scanning the area to verify the accurate placement of the microchip and establish a reliable connection between the scanner and the database, allowing for the precise retrieval of the unique ID.

Pet Registration

Once your appointment is complete, we will promptly register all puppies and kittens on the Smarttrace National Pet Database, which includes a UK-based call centre available around the clock. This database offers expert support and features a dedicated service for lost or stolen pets. The Smarttrace National Pet Database will issue a confirmation email to you, acknowledging the registration of the microchip for your pet.

To ensure compliance with legal requirements and maximize the effectiveness of the microchip, it is important to keep your details up to date, particularly when there are changes in your address or contact information.

After The Appointment

During the initial 4-hour period after the procedure, it is important to avoid contact with the implantation area. This allows the site to heal and reduces sensitivity that your pet may experience when the area is touched.

To maintain a clean and sterile environment for the injection site, it is best to keep your pet indoors after the procedure, minimizing the risk of dirt entering and potentially causing an infection.

To ensure the comfort and healing of the injection site, we advise against using a harness or clothing on your pet for at least 4 hours after the procedure, as it may cause rubbing and inflammation.

For the well-being and proper healing of your pet’s implantation site, it is recommended to avoid bathing them for at least 24 hours after the procedure to minimize the risk of infection.
