When To Scan?

Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation

At the optimal timeframe of 30-35 days from the last mating, our team performs the first scan, which is instrumental in confirming pregnancy, estimating the number of puppies, and determining the due date.

*It’s important to note that estimating the number of puppies can be challenging as gestation sacs frequently overlap, leading to the possibility of counting them twice.

Scan 2 – Detailed View

At the ideal stage of 50+ days gestation, a rescan provides valuable insights into the pregnancy’s progress and offers a detailed glimpse of the puppies. Included in our service are heartwarming photos and videos sent via email, ensuring a delightful keepsake for you and your beloved pet.

Scan 3 – Post Whelping

We understand the importance of ensuring a smooth birthing process for your pet. With our additional scan, we can provide peace of mind by confirming that the bitch has completed the birth process and by ruling out any retained afterbirths.

Benefits

  • To verify pregnancy and evaluating the health and viability of the puppies.
  • To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
  • Rule out phantom pregnancy.
  • Provides reassurance for the owner.
  • Highlights potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
  • Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
  • Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
  • Failure to seek immediate vet referral for these conditions can have fatal consequences.

What To Expect At The Appointment

Appointment length: we recommend allowing up to 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.

Step 1

At our clinic, we strive to create a positive and relaxing experience for you and your pet. We start each appointment by spending time with your pet, making them feel comfortable and at ease. We will guide you through the scan procedure, share our expectations, and ensure all necessary consent forms are completed.

Step 2

Once our scanning equipment is ready, we’ll gently position your pet on a cozy vet bed mat, focusing on their stomach area. We kindly request you to assist in keeping your pet in position during the scan, as this helps maintain their stillness and relaxation. Depending on your pet’s comfort, we can perform the scan while they lie down on their back or stand up.

To facilitate the scan, we will apply a generous layer of ultrasound gel to your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.

Step 3

While conducting the scan, we will make meticulous adjustments to the scanner’s settings to attain the highest level of picture quality. Our evaluation will begin at your pet’s tail end, moving along the midline to thoroughly examine the interior and confirm pregnancy, while also identifying individual heartbeats to assess viability.

When appropriate, we will pause the screen to offer a comprehensive explanation of our observations. Moreover, we can record cine clips to capture significant moments and send them to you via email, along with any images acquired during the appointment.

Step 4

Once the scan is finalized, we will meticulously clean off any excess gel, reducing the need for self-cleaning.

We will be there to address any concerns you may have and offer valuable advice on pregnancy and whelping, if needed.

If the initial scan doesn’t confirm a pregnancy, we are happy to discuss a rescan option. You can schedule a discounted rescan within 7-10 days of the initial scan. Please bear in mind that the visibility of the pregnancy may improve as the gestation period approaches 30 days.
