When To Scan?
Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation
The initial scan is typically conducted between 30-35 days from the last mating, serving to confirm pregnancy and providing an ideal opportunity to estimate the number of puppies and determine the due date.
*Please note that the number of puppies provided is an estimate, taking into account the tendency of gestation sacs to hide behind one another, which may result in a duplication of count.
Scan 2 – Detailed View
Optimal for a rescan at 50+ days gestation, we assess the pregnancy’s progress and provide a detailed examination of the adorable puppies. As a special addition, we offer the delightful experience of receiving photos and videos through email, serving as a treasured keepsake.
Scan 3 – Post Whelping
We understand the importance of ensuring a smooth birthing process for your pet. With our additional scan, we can provide peace of mind by confirming that the bitch has completed the birth process and by ruling out any retained afterbirths.
Benefits
- To confirm pregnancy and evaluating the health and viability of the puppies.
- To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
- Rule out phantom pregnancy.
- Provides reassurance for the owner.
- Highlights potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
- Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
- Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
- Urgent vet referral is vital to mitigate the life-threatening risks posed by these conditions.
What To Expect At The Appointment
Appointment length: please plan for a duration of up to 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.
Step 1
Providing a comfortable experience is our priority. Together, we take the time to acquaint ourselves with your pet and ensure they feel at ease. We will walk you through the scanning procedure, discuss the anticipated outcomes, and ensure all necessary consent forms are taken care of.
Step 2
Once the scanning equipment is properly set up, we will position your pet on a comfortable vet bed mat, specifically targeting their stomach area. Throughout the scan, we kindly request your collaboration in helping your pet remain in position, ensuring their relaxation and cooperation.
We will begin the scan by applying an ample amount of ultrasound gel to both your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.
Step 3
Throughout the scan, we will make necessary adjustments to the scanner’s settings to enhance picture quality. By starting at your pet’s tail end and moving up the midline, we can thoroughly examine the interior to confirm pregnancy and assess viability by identifying individual heartbeats.
If appropriate, we will pause the screen to offer a thorough explanation of our findings. Moreover, we can record cine clips to highlight key moments and forward them to you via email, along with any images taken during the appointment.
Step 4
After finishing the scan, we will promptly wipe off any excess gel, minimizing the need for self-cleaning.
We will be ready to address any queries you might have and offer pregnancy and whelping advice if necessary.
If the first scan does not indicate a pregnancy, we offer the option of a rescan. Within 7-10 days of the initial scan, you can avail of our discounted rescan service. It’s important to note that the visibility of the pregnancy may improve after the gestation period reaches around 30 days.
