When To Scan?

Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation

Between 30-35 days from the last mating, we conduct the initial scan, which not only confirms pregnancy but also provides valuable information such as the estimated number of puppies and the anticipated due date.

*Please note that the indicated number of puppies is an estimation, considering the fact that gestation sacs often overlap, making it possible to inadvertently count them twice.

Scan 2 – Detailed View

Once the pregnancy reaches 50+ days gestation, it’s the perfect time for a rescan to confirm the pregnancy’s healthy advancement and to get a comprehensive look at the puppies. As part of our service, we offer heartwarming photos and videos via email, making it a wonderful keepsake for you.

Scan 3 – Post Whelping

To further ensure your pet’s well-being, we offer a scan to confirm that the bitch has safely completed the birthing process and to check for any retained afterbirths, giving you added peace of mind.

Benefits

  • To verify pregnancy and ensuring the well-being of the puppies.
  • To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
  • Eleminate possiblity of phantom pregnancy.
  • Provides reassurance for the owner.
  • Identifies potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
  • Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
  • Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
  • Failure to seek immediate vet referral for these conditions can have fatal consequences.

What To Expect At The Appointment

Appointment length: kindly set aside about 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.

Step 1

We prioritize creating a calming environment for you and your pet. As part of our approach, we spend time at the beginning of the appointment getting to know your pet and helping them feel at ease. We will guide you through the scanning process, discuss the expected outcomes, and ensure all necessary consent forms are filled out.

Step 2

Once our scanning equipment is ready, we’ll gently position your pet on a cozy vet bed mat, focusing on their stomach area. We kindly request you to assist in keeping your pet in position during the scan, as this helps maintain their stillness and relaxation. Depending on your pet’s comfort, we can perform the scan while they lie down on their back or stand up.

We will begin the scan by applying an ample amount of ultrasound gel to both your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.

Step 3

During the scan, we will fine-tune the scanner’s settings to optimize the picture quality. Our scanning process begins at your pet’s tail end and progresses along the midline, enabling us to carefully inspect the interior and ascertain pregnancy while identifying individual heartbeats to assess viability.

Whenever feasible, we will pause the screen to provide a detailed explanation of what we observe during the scan. Additionally, we can capture cine clips to showcase specific moments and email them to you along with any images taken during the appointment.

Step 4

Once the scan is finalized, we will meticulously clean off any excess gel, reducing the need for self-cleaning.

We will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have and provide advice on pregnancy and whelping, if necessary.

In the event of a negative finding on the initial scan, we provide the opportunity for a rescan. You can schedule a discounted rescan within 7-10 days of the first appointment. Keep in mind that it may take until approximately the 30-day gestation period for the pregnancy to become more visible on the scan.
