When To Scan?
Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation
During the crucial 30-35 day period following the last mating, we conduct the first scan, enabling us to confirm pregnancy, estimate the number of puppies, and establish the due date.
*Please note that the number of puppies provided is an estimate, as gestation sacs tend to hide behind one another, which may result in an unintentional duplication during the counting process.
Scan 2 – Detailed View
Optimal for a rescan at 50+ days gestation, we assess the pregnancy’s progress and provide a detailed examination of the adorable puppies. As a special addition, we offer the delightful experience of receiving photos and videos through email, serving as a treasured keepsake.
Scan 3 – Post Whelping
To give you complete peace of mind, we offer an additional scan to verify that the bitch has safely delivered all the puppies and to ensure there are no retained afterbirths.
Benefits
- To verify pregnancy and evaluating the health and viability of the puppies.
- To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
- Rule out phantom pregnancy.
- Offers reassurance for the owner.
- Detects potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
- Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
- Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
- Failure to seek immediate vet referral for these conditions can have fatal consequences.
What To Expect At The Appointment
Appointment length: we recommend allowing up to 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.
Step 1
Putting your pet’s comfort first, we believe in taking the time to build trust and familiarity. Before the scan, we introduce ourselves to your pet, allowing them to feel relaxed and secure. We will provide a detailed explanation of the scanning process, discuss what we expect to observe, and address any concerns or questions you may have.
Step 2
Following the setup of the scanning equipment, we will gently position your pet on a plush vet bed mat, paying close attention to their stomach area. We kindly request your cooperation in helping your pet stay in position, facilitating their relaxation throughout the scan.
Ensuring optimal scanning conditions, we will coat your pet’s stomach area and the probe head with ultrasound gel before commencing the scan.
Step 3
Throughout the scan, we will fine-tune the scanner’s settings to maximize the clarity of the images. Starting from your pet’s tail end and proceeding along the midline, we will carefully inspect the interior, confirming pregnancy and assessing viability by detecting individual heartbeats.
If applicable, we will pause the screen to provide a visual explanation of our findings. We can also record cine clips to capture important moments and share them with you via email, along with any images obtained during the appointment.
Step 4
After completing the scan, we will take the necessary steps to wipe off any excess gel, reducing the need for self-cleaning.
Rest assured that we are available to answer any questions you may have and offer guidance on pregnancy and whelping if required.
In the event of a negative scan, we can explore the option of a follow-up appointment. Our discounted rescan service is available within 7-10 days of the initial scan. It’s worth noting that pregnancy may become clearer on the scan after reaching the 30-day gestation mark.
