When To Scan?
Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation
Between 30-35 days from the last mating, our skilled team conducts the first scan, which is crucial for pregnancy confirmation, as well as estimating the number of puppies and determining the due date.
*It’s important to note that estimating the number of puppies can be challenging as gestation sacs frequently overlap, leading to the possibility of counting them twice.
Scan 2 – Detailed View
The optimal time for a rescan is at 50+ days gestation, allowing us to monitor the pregnancy’s progress closely and obtain a detailed view of the puppies. With each rescan, we provide delightful photos and videos via email, serving as a beautiful keepsake.
Scan 3 – Post Whelping
To further ensure your pet’s well-being, we offer a scan to confirm that the bitch has safely completed the birthing process and to check for any retained afterbirths, giving you added peace of mind.
Benefits
- To confirm pregnancy and evaluating the health and viability of the puppies.
- To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
- Eleminate possiblity of phantom pregnancy.
- Offers reassurance for the owner.
- Identifies potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
- Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
- Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
- Ignoring these conditions can lead to severe consequences, including potential fatality.
What To Expect At The Appointment
Appointment length: please plan for a duration of up to 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.
Step 1
We care deeply about your pet’s comfort, which is why we make it a priority to establish a connection before starting the scan. By spending time with your pet, explaining the procedure, and addressing any concerns, we create a calm and comforting atmosphere.
Step 2
When the scanning equipment is ready, we’ll place your pet on a cozy vet bed mat, with a primary focus on their stomach area. To facilitate a smooth scan, we kindly request you to help keep your pet still and relaxed during the procedure. Whether your pet prefers lying down on their back or standing, we’ll accommodate their comfort.
We will prepare for the scan by applying an ample amount of ultrasound gel to both your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.
Step 3
While conducting the scan, we will make meticulous adjustments to the scanner’s settings to attain the highest level of picture quality. Our evaluation will begin at your pet’s tail end, moving along the midline to thoroughly examine the interior and confirm pregnancy, while also identifying individual heartbeats to assess viability.
Whenever possible, we will pause the screen to provide a detailed description of our findings. Furthermore, we can record cine clips to capture important moments and send them to you via email, along with any images obtained during the appointment.
Step 4
Once the scan is finished, we will carefully remove any remaining gel to minimize the need for self-cleaning.
We will be at your disposal to respond to any inquiries and provide expert advice on pregnancy and whelping, if necessary.
If the first scan does not indicate a pregnancy, we offer the option of a rescan. Within 7-10 days of the initial scan, you can avail of our discounted rescan service. It’s important to note that the visibility of the pregnancy may improve after the gestation period reaches around 30 days.
