When To Scan?

Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation

The first scan, performed around 30-35 days from the last mating, plays a vital role in confirming pregnancy, while also allowing us to estimate the number of puppies and calculate the due date.

*Please note that the number of puppies provided is an estimate, taking into account the tendency of gestation sacs to hide behind one another, which may result in a duplication of count.

Scan 2 – Detailed View

Optimal for a rescan at 50+ days gestation, we assess the pregnancy’s progress and provide a detailed examination of the adorable puppies. As a special addition, we offer the delightful experience of receiving photos and videos through email, serving as a treasured keepsake.

Scan 3 – Post Whelping

Your pet’s safety and well-being are our top priorities. That’s why we offer a scan to ensure that the bitch has successfully given birth and to check for any potential issues, such as retained afterbirths.

What To Expect At The Appointment

Appointment length: please plan for a duration of up to 45 minutes for your pet’s appointment.

Step 1

At our clinic, we understand the importance of putting you and your pet at ease. We dedicate time at the start of the appointment to meet your pet, allowing them to feel comfortable and relaxed before the scan begins. During this time, we will also explain the scanning process, discuss what we hope to see, and complete an informed consent form.

Step 2

To initiate the scan, we’ll position your pet on a cozy vet bed mat, paying special attention to their stomach area. As we proceed with the scan, we kindly request you to keep your pet in position, ensuring their stillness and relaxation. Whether your pet prefers lying down on their back or standing, we’ll accommodate their comfort.

Before beginning the scan, we will apply a sufficient amount of ultrasound gel to your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.

Step 3

Throughout the scan, we will fine-tune the scanner’s settings to maximize the clarity of the images. Starting from your pet’s tail end and proceeding along the midline, we will carefully inspect the interior, confirming pregnancy and assessing viability by detecting individual heartbeats.

Whenever feasible, we will pause the screen to provide a detailed explanation of what we observe during the scan. Additionally, we can capture cine clips to showcase specific moments and email them to you along with any images taken during the appointment.

Step 4

Once the scan is wrapped up, we will ensure to wipe off any excess gel, reducing the need for self-cleaning.

We will be at your disposal to respond to any inquiries and provide expert advice on pregnancy and whelping, if necessary.

If the initial scan does not reveal a pregnancy, we can discuss the option of a rescan. You have the opportunity to schedule a discounted rescan within 7-10 days of the initial appointment. It’s worth noting that the visibility of the pregnancy may improve as the gestation period progresses, particularly after 30 days.
