When To Scan?
Scan 1 – Pregnancy Confirmation
Between 30-35 days from the last mating, we conduct the initial scan, which not only confirms pregnancy but also provides valuable information such as the estimated number of puppies and the anticipated due date.
*Please note that the number of puppies provided is an estimate, taking into account the tendency of gestation sacs to hide behind one another, which may result in a duplication of count.
Scan 2 – Detailed View
At 50+ days gestation, a follow-up scan is conducted to ensure that the pregnancy is advancing as anticipated and to obtain a detailed view of the puppies. As part of the package, we offer the option to receive photos and videos via email, serving as a cherished keepsake.
Scan 3 – Post Whelping
To give you complete peace of mind, we offer an additional scan to verify that the bitch has safely delivered all the puppies and to ensure there are no retained afterbirths.
Benefits
- To verify pregnancy and provide insights into the viability of the puppies.
- To estimate the number of puppies expected and their due date.
- Eleminate possiblity of phantom pregnancy.
- Provides reassurance for the owner.
- Detects potential life-threatening problems that will require immediate vet referral including:
- Closed Pyometra- a bacterial infection of the uterus.
- Dystocia and its cause – difficulty giving birth and a failure to progress with labour.
- Ignoring these conditions can lead to severe consequences, including potential fatality.
What To Expect At The Appointment
Appointment length: please ensure that you have a window of 45 minutes available for your pet’s appointment.
Step 1
Prioritizing your pet’s well-being, we value the importance of creating a sense of ease. At the beginning of the appointment, we spend time with your pet, explaining the process, and addressing any questions to ensure a smooth and reassuring environment.
Step 2
When everything is set up, we’ll place your pet on a comfortable vet bed mat to examine their stomach area. To ensure their comfort and relaxation, we’ll kindly ask for your assistance in keeping them in position during the scan. Your pet can either lie down on their back or stand up, based on what they feel most at ease with.
To facilitate the scan, we will apply a generous layer of ultrasound gel to your pet’s stomach area and the probe head.
Step 3
As we perform the scan, we will make precise adjustments to the scanner’s settings in order to achieve optimal picture quality. Our examination will start at your pet’s tail end, progressing along the midline to carefully observe the interior, confirm pregnancy, and assess viability by identifying individual heartbeats.
When feasible, we will freeze the screen to explain our observations in detail. Additionally, we can create cine clips to document significant moments and share them with you via email, along with any images captured during the appointment.
Step 4
Once the scan is done, we will ensure to wipe off any excess gel, minimizing the need for self-cleaning.
Following the scan, we will be available to address any inquiries you may have and provide pregnancy and whelping advice if required.
If the initial scan doesn’t reveal a pregnancy, we can discuss the opportunity for a rescan. You have the option to schedule a discounted rescan within 7-10 days of the first appointment. Please remember that it may take until around the 30-day gestation period for the pregnancy to become more visible on the scan.
